Typically, a normal side template has a taper at the neck end to correct for the proper geometry at the neck... For a Venetian cutaway do you need to alter this taper to accommodate for the cutaway. ...you don't want the side width to come up short... I believe that I have seen that this is the case... Do you simply not put in the taper on the cutaway side or do you need to add to the width in this area to complete the cutaway and maintain the proper geometry? If there are any illustrations it might be helpful. Thanks, Steve |

Yes, it needs to stay taller. Lengthwise, the non cut side is longer as it passes the centerline and extends to the end of the neck block. Best bet is to find one and make a construction paper template... |

Or just don't taper the sides to a template and profile them after attaching them to the blocks. Just MO , but I find it easier this way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

You still need to know what shape to cut it too unless you want to do a lot of extra work with the radius dish. Plus you're throwing away a perfectly good set of bindings. Probably 85% of our guitars are bound in the offcuts of the sides. |

I cut the bindings off if I need them and the sides are wide enough. I cut the side down to the height of the git at the tail block. Bend, glue up. Then draw a line to the profile using the dish and a compass. Then trim to the line with a small plane and final shape it with the sanding dish. Doesn't take long at all, for me anyway. I tried the template way, and it is fine, just didn't care to have to keep it lined up in the bender. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Isn't there a rule of thumb about measuring and cutting out the cutaway side? I'd like to get close to the right geometry before I bend the side. Do you need to leave an extra 1/4" of width ...0.5"? I know I've seen this before... |
